myDartpfeil: a 3D dart shirt configurator for Shopify

One dart shirt, one player, one unique design: myDartpfeil wanted this to work even for an order of a single item. Demand was already there. But as long as every print file had to be created by hand, each additional shirt became another task for the team.

Since 2024, myDartpfeil has used the 3D Designer by 3ddesigner.io. Customers design their jerseys online and order through the existing Shopify store. myDartpfeil: a business built around personalization

In a December 2023 interview with StartupValley↗ (Opens in a new tab), the company described itself as the market leader for personalized darts. Adding custom shirts fitted this focus: players who use their own personalized darts often want to step up to the oche wearing their own design, too.

The trial proved demand – and exposed the limits of manual print files

In the year before working with us, myDartpfeil had already tested selling custom dart shirts with a simple prototype. Customers responded very positively. There was clear interest in personalized jerseys.

The difficulty came after the order. Each individual design had to become a finished print file. This took so long that the team could not keep up. Work queued before production, delivery times grew longer and the number of shirts they could process was limited by the working hours available.

Many darts customers order a single shirt. Each player wants their own design, so the cost of preparing print files cannot be spread across a large run of identical shirts. Offering a unique design from a single item required a process that did not mean starting over in graphics software every time.

Finding the right solution through LinkedIn

While searching on LinkedIn, myDartpfeil received a recommendation to talk to us. Our 3D Designer connected exactly the two steps the team needed: customers design their own jersey, and that design automatically becomes the file for production.

The configurator also had to fit into the existing Shopify store. myDartpfeil was already successfully selling its darts products there. The new shirts needed to be part of the same shopping experience.

One Shopify cart for darts and jerseys

The 3D Designer connects to Shopify and WooCommerce. For myDartpfeil, we used the Shopify integration: customers create their dart shirt in the designer and then add it to the familiar cart.

The jersey can sit alongside darts or other products from the store. Customers complete the entire purchase through the regular Shopify checkout. There is no separate ordering process for the custom shirt.

Checkout starts the automatic print preparation. The ordered design becomes a finished print file without the team having to recreate it manually in graphics software.

From checkout straight to the production folder

We also developed a Google Drive integration for myDartpfeil. It takes care of the next step: print files are automatically placed in the appropriate order folders. Production has direct access to those folders.

The production file reaches production just seconds after the customer places the order. Nobody has to prepare the design, gather the files and forward them individually first. The previous wait for manual print preparation disappears, creating an important foundation for shorter delivery times.

XXS to 6XL, with the right details for every player

A design needs to work across different sizes. In the myDartpfeil project, the designer handles automatic size scaling from XXS to 6XL. The design is prepared for the required size without the team having to adjust every variation individually.

For team orders, names, optional nicknames, numbers and sizes can be entered in a table. These details are used to generate the appropriate print files for every pattern piece for each player. A shared team design can be personalized for everyone without building each jersey separately by hand.

Many thousands of shirts, including the busy winter season

Since launch, many thousands of shirts have been ordered and their print files generated automatically. Automation is now an established part of the day-to-day business.

It becomes particularly valuable during the busy winter months around the World Darts Championship. When many customers order their own shirt at the same time, manually creating and agreeing every individual design would become a bottleneck. With the automated process, the next order gets its print files without someone having to create another design in graphics software.

myDartpfeil can therefore expand its shirt business without increasing manual print file work in the same proportion. This was the step that turned a successful trial into a sustainable offering for custom dart shirts.
